Flying no more – Google and Apple ground Flappy Bird clones

Flappy Bird was an addictive game developed by Vietnamese game developer Dong Nguyen. It took the developer about two or three days to create the game, and it was not marketed in any way. Yet, it became one of the top downloads earlier in the year. The game’s popularity came through reviews and word of mouth more than anything else.

Samsung Overtakes Apple to Become Top Traded-in Mobile Phone Brand 2014

If there was one trend which seemed prominent for phone manufacturers in 2013, it could certainly be seen as releasing as many phones as possible. Even Apple decided to release a cheaper alternative to its flagship smartphone, which seems a strange move for a brand which had previously focused on high-end pricing.
Apple was no competition for brands using Android though. The likes of HTC, Samsung and Sony brought out phones of the budget, mega, mini and damage-proof variety – in a bid to appeal to as many phone users as possible, whatever they wanted to use their devices for.

Samsung’s Galaxy range in particular seemed never-ending. The manufacturer revealed the Galaxy S4 Mega, S4 Mini, S4 Zoom, Note 3 – and I really could keep on going. But it seems that this stream of releases hasn’t just had an effect on Samsung’s sales.

Judge denies Samsung’s motion to halt Apple patent damages

apple vs samsung

Samsung tried to postpone Apple patent damages trial to wait on the Patent Office to examine an important patent’s validity. Last year a jury found that Samsung had violated five patents held by Apple for their iPhone’s design and functions. The judge over the case found in favor of Apple in the amount of around $450 million but later ordered a new trial to reassess damages. There was a previous trial that already awarded Apple $600 million to be paid by Samsung and now have to decide how much more they will add to the total.

Sleek bezels, thin edges and a diet that did wonders – here’s the iPad Air hands-on

While many were awaiting the iPad mini with Retina display, Apple was busy running the larger iPad through the treadmill so that when the unveiling came, it won’t fall into the shadow of its smaller sibling.

Apple, Best Buy will price match iPad Air to $480 in brick and mortar stores

The new Apple iPad Air was going to cost $500, but Walmart decided to knock $20 off. Apple itself along with Best Buy will be price matching the offer so a 16GB iPad Air will cost $480 at launch (which is today).

Android has more than 80% market share in Q3, shipments see a huge increase too

The dominance in the smartphone industry continues to be lead by Google. In new numbers estimated by Strategy Analytics, Android has more than 80% smartphone market share in Q3 of 2013 (April – June). That’s an increase over last year’s 75%. Apple is undoubtebly in second 13.4%, down from last year’s 15.6%. Microsoft has also seen growth, chiming in with more than 4%. And BlackBerry continues its struggles and is hanging on to just 1%. With the Nexus 5, Galaxy Note 3, and Moto X all being launched recently, it should be interesting to see how future quarters fluctuate with Apple’s release of the new iPhones. Hit the break for shipment numbers.

As you can see in the table above, there were more than 200 million Android smartphones that shipped in Q3 of 2013. As for Android’s biggest competition, Apple shipped more than 33 million handsets. Clearly this can be credited to the fact that Android has various OEMs to make their devices, helping distribution greatly.

Apple restocks first-gen iPad mini with Space Gray color option
