HiSense launching Vidaa, an Android Smart TV in 2014

Coming in March 2014, HiSense is launching its own line of Android Smart TVs ranging from 50-65 inches.  The Vidaa will come out of the box loaded with all your favorite Android apps such as Google Search, Chrome, and PrimeTime.

Hisense claims to know what the user really wants as far as apps and will be able to pull content from Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and Skydrive.  Vidaa also promises to be able to switch between apps with one button, so if you’re wanting to check the score of a football game while watching a movie, it will pause the movie and resume when you’re done cheering your team on!

This comes at a convenient time for Philips who is also debuting their Ambilight Android powered Smart TVs as well. There is no price available yet, but with a March release date, I am sure it’s not far.

The Nokia Normandy is rumored to be an Android device

android nokia

According to a recent report by The Verge, Nokia has an Android device nearly ready for consumer release.

What’s interesting is that Nokia has forked Android, similar to how Amazon uses it, to create a customized operating system. The move gives more control over the experience, differentiating it from other Android devices, while still allowing most Android apps to work on the device.

APPTEASERS: 20 great Android apps and games you should know about (October 25)

APPTEASERS is a collection of apps and games that are new to Android, recently updated, discounted, etc. Whatever the case, we think they’re worth exploring and are willing to bet that many of you would enjoy a few of them.

We understand that we won’t get every single app that crosses our path but we hope to filter things a bit and pass them along to you, dear reader. What you’ll find below is a quick plug for apps and games, occasionally using the developer’s own words to describe the title.

Note that this column is not intended to be a list of “must have” apps but more of a random assortment of titles you might not already know about. No, these are not always new titles. Yes, they can be from big name developers and little indie teams as well.

Also, be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ as we showcase different apps over on our social network streams.

Vast majority of highest grossing Android apps are free in Google Play

Free_Highest_Grossing

We always knew that many of the free apps available on Google Play were actually some of the highest grossing— there’s no way Gameloft and Rovio (and many other developers) could continuously put out free games and not turn a profit.

In a new statistic from App Annie, it shows that a staggering 96% of the top 100 highest grossing apps in the Play store are actually free to download. Whether its heavy merchandising or in-app purchases, these apps are simply thriving above the rest.

In comparison, only 77% of the highest grossing iPhone apps are free to download, while 69% of the highest grossing iPad apps are free to download from the App Store.

So, developers: perhaps slapping a price tag on that new app of yours isn’t such a great idea after all!
