Welcome to our weekly column where we aim to help users find new applications for their Android smartphones and/or tablets. Called Five for Friday, these are small collection of apps or games centered around a common theme.
While we recognize that there are going to miss a bunch of titles or appear to have a partially completed list, that’s hardly the case. Rather, these are just five apps that we’ve picked to get you going in the right direction.
We understand that each of you is unique and typically have your own preferred apps for various tasks. For this reason, we ask that you add your titles to the comments below. This way other Android users can discover the stuff that we may overlook or omit.
This week’s topic: Film buffs and movie junkies
IMDb Movies & TV
The perfect companion app to have when chilling on the couch, also makes for a handy reference tool for parents and potential movie-goers. Far better looking than the website that bears its own name, the IMDb app provides access to news, trailers, trivia, goofs, and more. Looking for news on your favorite actor or director? You’ll love being able to set up notifications and get up-to-the-minute information. Additional details include movie show times and TV listings, the ability to log in and rate titles, and tracking movies and TV shows with a Watchlist.
One of the first names in on-demand movies and television shows, Netflix is our preferred way of killing two hours on a plane. Although the virtual library pales in comparison to the DVD service, we use it to catch up on a television series or documentary nonetheless. The app works wonderful on phones but really shines when there’s 7-inches of display size or more. The application is free to download and install however there are various charges or subscription fees for membership. Make sure to rate your movies and TV shows when you’re finished watching so the “system” can learn your favorites and recommend new stuff!
Movie by Flixter
The first movie-related application we ever downloaded for our Android smartphone, we’ve been hooked ever since. Continually improved with each release, this app makes it a breeze to hunt down movie theaters, showtimes, trailers, and more. We’re also fond of using the app for keeping up with DVD releases and the upcoming calendar of events. Star your favorite theaters for instant access to tonight’s showings or rely on the location-awareness to point you in the direction of an art house theater when you’re traveling!
Moviefone provides access to movies and showtimes nearby with maps, phone numbers, and directions. If you’re ready to purchase a few seats then stay within the app and grab your tickets from your your mobile handset or tablet. We also like perusing the database of 300,000 movies and checking pictures, trailers, bios, photos and filmographies.
The premier name in buying tickets in an online capacity, it doesn’t get much easier than with Fandango’s official app. While features for this free client include searching for local showtimes, purchasing tickets, and rating movies, there’s much more going on. We’re fond of the “Next Hour” option which pulls together all the movies showing in your neck of the woods that have showings that start in the next hour. The latest release offers users an experience that is tailored around Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and looks as sharp as it does fun.
