Rogers lights up LTE in Toronto and Vancouver metro areas

Canada’s leading wireless carrier is spreading the LTE magic in more areas. Rogers Communication today announced that it is expanding coverage of Long Term Evolution, the faster kind of 4G being developed in North America, in the Greater Toronto Area and communities that surround Vancouver, British Columbia.

Rogers had already delivered LTE to Toronto, but not in all of the surrounding areas like Brampton, Markham, Mississauga, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan. Residents of those areas will be able to enjoy the faster speeds at home rather than just when they go closer to the city. The same goes for residents of the Vancouver metro area. LTE has just been turned on in Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge, North Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Surrey, and West Vancouver.

An LTE-capable device will be required to see a difference in speed, so users will need to own or upgrade to a Samsung Galaxy S II LTE or HTC Raider LTE phone. The HTC Jetstream LTE tablet is also compatible. Prices for each device varies, but more information is available at RogersLTE.com

The current areas supported by Rogers LTE are Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver. Canadians can sign-up at IWantMyLTE.ca to be notified when LTE service goes live in their city. A coverage map available at RogersLTE shows the areas that already have LTE, will get LTE soon, and which areas have HSPA+ for now.

CyanogenMod drops support for Samsung Vibrant because of 911 routing issue

Samsung Vibrant owners who love CyanogenMod will not see any new ROM’s, at least for the foreseeable future, from Team Douche. CM Forum Moderator ciwrl announced yesterday that development for the Samsung Vibrant has ceased due to an issue with dialing 911 Emergency services. The statement posted on the CM Vibrant forum reads

We are no longer supporting the Vibrant due to the inability to dial 911. We consider the issues related to this unresolvable without source code from Samsung related to the Radio interface layer and its interactions with the Audio layers and have taken the decision to no longer support this. We apologize for the inconvenience and strongly suggest that Vibrant users use a Samsung ROM due to the 911 issues with any ROMs based on open source code.

The problem stems from the way that the Vibrant handle call routing to 911. There are “patches” that make it possible to dial 911, but audio issues prevent the operator from hearing the caller. Figuring out the proper way to have custom builds dial emergency services require reverse engineering that has so far proved fruitless, so support for the Vibrant has been dropped. (Things could change with more information.)

ciwrl elaborated on his Google+ page that the risk of a CM user – or one using the ROM’s based on CM work – being unable to communicate with a 911 operator in the event of an emergency is too great to continue supporting the device. “The consequences of an actual emergency situation going wrong are not one we want to be a part of,” ciwrl posted.

The only other Samsung device known to face this issue is the Samsung Epic 4G. Adnan Begovic, a ROM developer working on the build for that device, states that reverse engineering to discover a fix “is now the primary concern for the group working on the Epic 4G build.” As disappointing as that may sound to some users who were anxious to use CM9 on their device, Begovic poignantly states why this is a necessary step, writing “I do not want to be a reason someone loses life or limb because they cannot get the proper emergency services.”

Nook Color update adds Netflix, Flixster, Comics, and “100 enhancements”

Hey there, Nook Color owners. Feeling down that a year after you purchased Barnes & Noble’s first attempt at a sorta-tablet, the company already has a proper tablet on the market? Don’t be, because you’re getting a software update today that should lessen the gap between the Nook Color and the Nook Tablet.

Barnes & Noble announced today that Nook Color version 1.4.1 will add “over 100 enhancements” to the device. Those enhancements range from the minute – like more font size selections, better dictionary look-ups, and reading books in portray or landscape – to the major, like getting support for Nook Comics and Netflix. Today’s update grants Netflix members access to their Instant Streaming queue . Speaking of movies, 1.4.1 also supports Flixster for movie tracking and watching.

The Nook Color update will be sent out over the air soon, but impatient users can download it now from B&N.com. Make sure that your Nook Color is fully charged and then follow the instructions under the “Get Version 1.4.1 Today” link here.

And while I personally would recommend spending the extra $50 to get a Nook Tablet, Barnes & Noble is still selling the Nook Color for $199. Buy one today (December 12, 2011) with a Mastercard credit card and you’ll get a $25 B&N gift card. The same deal applies to the Nook Tablet.

Android’s most popular app is also one of its most-criticized. [App popularity by age group]

If you had to guess which Android app is most popular among Android users, you’d probably guess that it’s Google Maps or maybe YouTube, right? Well, you would be wrong according to the App-Happy With Android report released by Nielsen today.

What’s the most popular app on Android? Facebook. Despite negative comments and ratings for the many iterations that have failed to satisfy Android users, Facebook is the most actively-used Android app among users 18 to 44. More than 80 percent of users in the 18-24 and 25-34 demographics have used the Facebook in the last 30 days; 77 percent of users 35-44 accessed Facebook. That bests all apps other than the Android Market (I don’t count that because it’s just a portal to get more apps and media content).

Nielsen’s chart shows that Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube are universally the remaining of the Top 5 apps, though positioning varies slightly among the age groups. That trend of similarity continues for other apps popular across the board, including Angry Birds, Words With Friends, and the Amazon Appstore.

According to its announcement post, Nielsen defines app popularity by how much penetration it has among active users. The company reached these numbers by analyzing usage data on Android phones equipped with its monitoring software, and then ranked apps according to the percentage of users who accessed it within the past 30 days. Here’s a chart showing app popularity among the age groups.

Halo Waypoint connects Halo players on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7

Sure, Microsoft wants the whole world to convert to its Windows Phone 7 phones, but it’s smart enough to know that the company still needs to keep fans of its Xbox 360 gaming console happy, too. Microsoft threw those users a bone with the release of Halo Waypoint, a new companion app for Halo: Reach players with Android 2.2 or higher.

Halo Waypoint is “the official app for all things Halo on your Android phone” according to Microsoft. The app provides a mobile look at Waypoint Career progress, stats, game history, and campaign progress from Halo: Reach. Gamers can also connect with their friends by creating custom challenges and then invite their friends to play. Challenges can be centered on game type, goals, time limit, or score amount.

Waypoint also has ATLAS to assist Reach players. The Assisted Tactical Assault System offers “near-real-time” data that should better-inform strategy. ATLAS shows where weapons, vehicles, health packs, and teammates are located. It also has information on current scores and what weapons are being used by teammates.

Grab the app now if you’re a Halo: Reach combat nut. Here’s a hands-on demo from the folks at Microsoft and Brady Games showing off what ATLAS can do.
